My Name is Marlon Magdalena, I am an enrolled tribal member of the Pueblo of Jemez (HAY-mes), in New Mexico, therfore I am Jemez (We call ourselves HEE-MEESH). My name Ælu'æki was given to me by my grandpa. It means "Young Elk". I have lived in Jemez Pueblo since I was a baby. My Mother is from Jemez Pueblo, and so are both her parents (My Maternal Grandparents- The Sando's and The Panana's). My Father is also from Jemez Pueblo, and both his parents (My Paternal Grandparents- The Magdalena's and The Mora's and Vigil's) are from Jemez. I have been an active participating member of my tribe since childhood. My Dad and Grandpa took me with them to the fields, where our corn and chile would be growing. Now, I help continue that tradition of farming by planting my own fields of corn. I have been going to our traditional ceremonies since chilhood with my family, and I continue to do so.
Read an experience I had in Chaco Canyon I am currently pursuing a degree in Anthropology, but that's on hold for now (UNM, UA, UPENN). I work at the Jemez State Monument where I share as much about our Jemez History and Culture as I can. All throughout Elementary, High School, and College I was very much into all types of art. I loved to draw and paint. Some of my best work came from High School (Albuquerque Academy) and College (UNM). My favorite mediums are Oil, Acrylic, and Watercolor paints. When I was in Elementary (Jemez Day School), we were taught music by Mr. Willink. He helped me with basic knowledge of music that I now utilize with my flutes. Educational |
Thanks to my soon-to-be wife, Audrey, for all her love and support, without which, I might not have the time to make or play flutes or do any other art for that matter.
Thanks for reading more about me, and I hope this gives you a sense of who I am. ![]() |
